Combustion engines run in only a narrow speed range with optimum torque value and efficiency. This range can be utilized optimally through the transmission. Furthermore, the transmission permits the attainment of a minimum torque which is required for starting. The connecting elements between the engine / input shaft and the powertrain / output shaft convert the motor speed into a higher or lower drive speed. Vehicle gearboxes are to be distinguished from distributor gears. The designs of vehicle transmissions are manual transmissions, semi-automatic transmissions, automated transmissions, automatic transmissions and infinitely variable transmissions.
